AWP is recognized as a leader in responsible forestry practices. In 1996, the National Hardwood Lumber Association awarded the Forest Stewardship Award to the company. Selected from over 1,700 companies throughout North America, this award acknowledges AWP’s forest management practices; public education programs about forest stewardship; political involvement to benefit forest stewardship legislation; participation with national, state and local forestry associations to promote forest stewardship to landowners; and mill practices which maximize forest resource utilization. In addition, AWP was awarded the West Virginia Forestry Association’s 1998, 1994 and 1993 Environmental Awards and the 1995 Service Award.
Being an active member of the American Forest and Paper Association, AWP is strongly committed to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and scientists that integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality.
